Background to School

The Mission statement

“Furthering Excellence” through Support, Encouragement and Achievement. This will be evident because:

  • Students will support each other and be motivated to learn and to achieve.
  • Staff will provide the learning environment, the support and the personal challenge through which each student can excel.
  • Parents will support the school ethos and fully contribute to the life of the school.
  • Governors will be critical champions of the school.

Background to School

The Rochester Grammar School is a heavily oversubscribed five form entry Foundation School, and is a selective girls’ school that admits male students into the Sixth Form. It was established in 1888 and until July 1990 the school operated as a split site school. In September 1990, however, the school moved into new buildings and the original 1888 building closed. This September opened a new two storey teaching and training block, with the latest mobile IT technology. The school has 1050 pupils, with 280 in the Sixth form. There are 64 full time staff and 4 part time staff. We have 27 support staff.

The school is designated a combined mathematics/computing and music specialist school – the first in the country. We also have NAACE ICT Kitemark, Artsmark Silver, International Schools Award, Healthy Schools Award and we are currently working towards Investors in Careers.

The school is situated on a pleasant open site about a mile out of Rochester and within easy reach of the M2 and M20. Pupils at the school are well motivated and able and the new facilities now available are among the best in Medway. Excellent examination results are a priority, both in ensuring 100% 5A*-C pass at GCSE level, and 100% A - E pass at 'A' Level, but also in ensuring that all girls achieve their full potential. This is why the school sets A*/A targets and GCSE and A/B grades at Advanced level. From September 2007 our KS5 curriculum is further enhanced by the addition of the International Baccalaureate Diploma. We were described in our latest OfSTED report in November 2003 as “a highly effective school with many outstanding features”. The school was also listed as an outstanding school in the HMCI’s annual report. This is the second time in succession we have achieved this. The report clearly demonstrates the school’s total commitment to providing an excellent learning environment and love of learning: “Pupils develop very mature attitudes and a strong desire to learn; this contributes to the excellent ethos for learning throughout the school”.

Leadership and Management

The Senior Leadership Team comprises of a Headteacher, two Deputy Headteachers, two Assistant Headteachers and the Business Manager. The school has an extended senior leadership team of seven Learning Directors. Middle leadership consists of Curriculum Leaders, Heads of House, Lead Practitioners and Performance Coaches. We have an innovatory curriculum with a two year compressed KS3 which allows for early entry to GCSE and then access to a range of AS courses by the end of Year 11. As a specialist school, there is a high commitment to mathematics, ICT and music.

Teaching and Learning

The school received an outstanding Ofsted report in November 2003, in which we were praised for our commitment to the highest standards in teaching and learning. We aim to create a working environment where our students can think independently and engage enthusiastically with their own learning.

Equal Opportunities and High Expectations

Equal opportunities for girls continues to be a feature of the school and all staff are expected to contribute to this aim. There is a high expectation from staff, pupils and parents that the girls will proceed to higher education and that gender issues will not bar them from any subject in the curriculum or access to future careers. Open day for prospective Year 7 pupils is held on a Saturday and all staff attend. This year again, staff organised and attended a Saturday Taster Day for Year 6 primary pupils.

Staff work extremely hard and are expected to maintain a high professional standard in dress, classroom teaching and relationships with pupils.

Continuing Professional Development

For newly qualified staff a detailed and supportive programme is organised by an Assistant Headteacher who is also our CPD Co-ordinator. We are a member of the Kent and Medway Teacher Training Consortium and train a number of graduates each year. CPD is an entitlement for all members of staff and we invest heavily in this each year. The school is a specialist schools CPD Centre for English teaching.

The school has a new Performing Arts block with music rooms and a Dance/Drama studio, a new sixth form block, two extra science laboratories. Two new art rooms extra facilities for design and technology were completed and in 2002 two new art rooms were added. The next building phase will be completed by September 2007, comprising a new teaching block with innovatory ICT mobile equipment. The school is fortunate in having a committed and experienced Governing Body, supported by a lively and progressive Parent Staff Association.
