"Provision for Art and Design is excellent. Teaching and learning are excellent, teachers have very good command of the subject. Lessons challenge, but pupils rise to the challenge of high expectations." - OfSTED
The Art Department aims to develop in all students their creative, imaginative and practical skills through a balanced programme of art, craft and design activities working individually, in groups and as a whole class. Art education is a continuous process and it is hoped that whatever level the students themselves take these studies to, they will have the confidence and enjoyment to continue their own work in the future; to have a greater understanding of the work of artists, designers and craftworkers; to have a more lively appreciation and to make informed judgements of the natural and man-made world around them.
All students in years 7 and 8 follow a programme of study that fulfils the requirements of the National Curriculum and projects include the practice of drawing and painting, three-dimensional work and printmaking. Students build on previous learning. Drawing is a basic skill developed in all units of work throughout all three years.
Students opting for Art at GCSE will follow the AQA (fine art) syllabus. Students are required to submit 2 – 3 units of coursework and complete a timed examination in year 11. The timed examination takes place over two full days in the studio, with four weeks prior to this spent in preparation. Coursework is 60% of the final grade and students work towards this from the beginning of year 10.
Students are to provide a wide and exciting range of art experiences which will allow students to discover their strengths in the subject.
Drawing is a key skill which continues to be developed and provides an important, assessed element in all units of work. Students will be taken on a trip to a London gallery in year 10 and year 11.
Sixth form Art requires a lot of independent work and exploration. Students are taken on at least one school organised trip per year, but are also expected to make visits to galleries and museums in their own time. Life drawing is an essential component – the school organises a one day workshop with a life model, and students are also advised to attend additional evening sessions at the local college. We have been fortunate to host workshops led by the Royal Academy (who send an artist and model) over the past three years.
In the sixth form art can be taken at A level or else as part of the I.B. course. If you are considering taking art in the sixth form, have a look at the course details on the 6th Form Art page
